Does collagen help with muscle soreness? What the research shows
Share
Short answer: Some small trials suggest collagen peptides may modestly speed recovery of muscle function and reduce soreness about 48 hours after damaging exercise, but the evidence is limited and the studies are small. Collagen is not a proven fix for soreness.

What did the best-known collagen recovery trial find?
A 2019 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in the journal Amino Acids gave 24 recreationally active men either collagen peptides or a placebo. The collagen group took 20 g a day (10 g twice daily) for nine days: seven days before and two days after a bout of muscle-damaging exercise. The authors reported moderate benefits for recovery of countermovement jump performance and for muscle soreness at 48 hours. They found no effect on inflammation markers or on bone collagen synthesis. (Clifford et al., Amino Acids, 2019)
How strong is that evidence?
It is early-stage. The trial was small, included only men, and relied on indirect markers because muscle biopsies were not possible. A single trial cannot tell you whether the result holds for other people, other training, or other doses. A separate 2023 randomized crossover trial in healthy middle-aged men, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, also examined collagen peptides and exercise-induced soreness, so the question is being actively studied. Does the dose in studies match a typical serving?
Not necessarily. The 2019 trial used 20 g of collagen peptides daily for several days around the exercise session. Always compare the amount per serving on a product label with the dose used in the research you are relying on.
What does this mean for your recovery routine?
Recovery still rests on the basics: enough total protein across the day, enough sleep, enough food overall, and sensible training load progression. If you choose to add collagen, treat it as an optional addition to those basics, not a replacement for them.
FAQ
Does collagen reduce muscle soreness?
One small randomized trial reported lower soreness 48 hours after damaging exercise with 20 g a day of collagen peptides. More research is needed before drawing firm conclusions.
Does collagen reduce inflammation after exercise?
In the same 2019 trial, the authors found no influence on inflammation markers.
Is collagen a complete protein?
Check the amino acid profile of any product you use. Collagen-based products differ, and label details matter.
