Why creatine leaves grit at the bottom of your glass
Share
Short answer: Creatine monohydrate doesn't dissolve well in water, and it dissolves even less as water gets colder: about 14 g per liter at 20°C (68°F) and about 6 g per liter at 4°C (39°F). A 5 g dose in a small glass of cold water often can't fully dissolve, so the rest settles as grit. More water, warmer water, or a format designed to disperse fixes it.

How much water does 5 g of creatine need?
| Water temperature | Creatine that dissolves per liter | Minimum water for 5 g |
|---|---|---|
| 4°C / 39°F (fridge-cold) | About 6 g | About 830 ml |
| 20°C / 68°F (room temperature) | About 14 g | About 360 ml |
| 50°C / 122°F (hot) | About 34 g | About 150 ml |
Solubility figures from Jäger et al., Amino Acids, 2011. These are upper limits under ideal stirring, so in a quick shake you may need more water than the table shows.
Is the grit wasted?
Only if you leave it in the glass. Creatine you swallow still counts, whether it was dissolved or not. If you see sediment, swirl and drink it. What's left at the bottom is creatine you didn't take.
Should you use hot water?
Warm water helps it dissolve, but creatine slowly breaks down into creatinine in warm, acidic liquids. Mixing in warm water is fine if you drink it soon. Avoid leaving it to sit.
Do more soluble forms of creatine work better?
Not according to current reviews. Creatine monohydrate is the most studied form. Reviews have found no clinical evidence that other forms, such as creatine HCl, ethyl ester or buffered creatine, are retained better in muscle than monohydrate. Dissolving better in a glass is not the same as being absorbed better. (Kreider et al., Nutrients, 2022)
How much creatine do studies typically use?
The International Society of Sports Nutrition describes a common maintenance intake of 3 to 5 g a day. (Kreider et al., JISSN, 2017)
How does REGENYX Wellness Day Recovery handle it?
Day Recovery uses 5 g of hydrogel-encapsulated creatine monohydrate per 40 g scoop. It is still creatine monohydrate, in a format designed to dissolve completely in cold water instead of settling out. Mix one scoop with 400 to 800 ml of cold water.
FAQ
Does creatine need to fully dissolve to work?
No. It needs to be swallowed. Dissolving mainly affects texture and whether you finish the whole dose.
Why does my creatine dissolve in hot coffee but not in cold water?
Creatine monohydrate's solubility rises with temperature, from about 6 g per liter at fridge temperature to about 34 g per liter at 50°C.
Does Day Recovery contain caffeine?
No. Day Recovery contains no caffeine or other stimulants.
